Haast to Wanaka

After a night in a small but clean motel just south of Haast we left Saturday morning to drive the Haast Pass through the mountains.

So much growth!  Moss and other plants growing all over the trees.

A short walk to stretch our legs to a the Roaring Billy Falls - too bad it was across the river so we couldn't really see it.  We had fun skipping stones though :)

And finding rocks.

This girl is always finding places to climb into for pictures!

Thunder Creek Falls

Walking to the Blue Pools.  I was brave and went across - these weren't so high!

I think at times they're much bluer but it had just rained which brings silt in and the colour's not quite so vibrant like in the Hokitika Gorge.

Lots of people were jumping off the bridge - sooo COLD!

Huge fungi on the trees.

And then once we were on the east side of the mountains it was like we were in a totally different country.  Dry and way warmer.

Beautiful views of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea!

After some scrambling and chaos we found a place to stay for a couple nights (albeit very expensive!).  We didn't have much wifi on the way down the west coast and I hadn't finalized anything.  We found a rental home in Wanaka - about an hour from Queenstown.

Three brave kids taking an evening swim.
